As a knitter and a weaver, I am always on the look out for places to source yarn. Purchasing locally is always much more cost efficient than importing from overseas due to high shipping costs to Australia. So here are a few of my favourite stores:
- Bendigo Woollen Mills
By far one of the best value for money yarn stores in Australia, that is, for the quality they are putting out. The yarns are great for knitting and weaving, and so affordably priced. The colour range is not as fresh and exciting as some of the newer yarn stores/brands. Mainly wool and cotton products.
I’m yet to visit their physical store in Bendigo, Vic but am very much looking forward to it one day! - Morris and Sons
A little bit pricy but there is a large range of yarn available for purchase, both in colour and fibre, as well as a few international brands- Rowan etc. I believe they also run classes. - Nundle Woollen Mill
A good variety of yarns here, lovely to have a different colour offering than the other stores. I did find the yarn to be slightly less consistent in terms of spin and appearance than the other stores. - Skein Sisters
Based in Dulwich Hill, Sydney – I used to live around the corner from this store so it was quite convenient to drop in to make a quick purchase. The staff there seem quite happy to help with your project. - The Little Yarn Store
A store I haven’t purchased from but have been intending to as I wanted to purchase some Isager yarn! - Sunspun
Again I am yet to purchase from here but they also stock Isager. - Thread Collective
A multi purpose online store, based in Queensland – they sell yarn, looms and accessories for weaving. I have purchased both my new looms from here. - Facebook Marketplace
I’m often able to find someone selling from their yarn stash on Facebook Marketplace, the only downside is that you can’t feel the yarn before purchasing if you are unfamiliar with the brand. But bargains are to be found on this platform.
